ai16z is a Solana-based project and meme coin that emerged during the AI agent meta of late 2024, built around an AI agent character modeled as an AI version of the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z). The project became the largest AI agent token by market cap during this period and spawned the Eliza AI agent framework, which became an open-source platform for building autonomous AI agents with social media presence.

ai16z was developed by "shaw" (Shawn Coetzee) and positioned the AI agent "Marc AIndreessen" as the autonomous manager of an investment DAO. The concept — an AI that could theoretically make investment decisions for a decentralized fund — captured the imagination of CT at a moment when AI agent capabilities were advancing rapidly and the GOAT experiment had demonstrated market appetite for the narrative.
Eliza framework
The most durable output of the ai16z project was the Eliza framework (later rebranded), an open-source TypeScript framework for building AI agents with persistent memory, multi-platform social media presence, and wallet connectivity. Eliza became widely adopted beyond the ai16z token itself, becoming one of the most starred AI repositories on GitHub in late 2024.
