Dogecoin (DOGE) is the original meme coin, launched in December 2013 as a parody, that grew to become one of the top cryptocurrencies by market cap.

Dogecoin (ticker: DOGE) is the original meme coin — a proof-of-work cryptocurrency launched in December 2013 by software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a lighthearted parody of the growing cryptocurrency landscape. Based on the "Doge" internet meme featuring a Shiba Inu dog with multicolored text, Dogecoin was explicitly designed to be more accessible and fun than Bitcoin. Despite — or because of — its origins as a joke, Dogecoin developed a large and active community, achieved multiple all-time highs far above its launch price, and established the template that every subsequent meme coin has followed.

History

Dogecoin launched on December 6, 2013 using a fork of Litecoin's codebase with a Scrypt proof-of-work algorithm. Unlike Bitcoin's fixed supply of 21 million coins, Dogecoin was designed with an inflationary supply of 5 billion new DOGE per year — intentionally making it unsuitable as a "store of value" and positioning it as a tipping and transactional currency.

The coin developed an unusually generous community culture, most famously demonstrated when the community crowdfunded the $25,000 sponsorship of NASCAR driver Josh Wise and later raised $50,000 to send the Jamaican bobsled team to the 2014 Olympics. These acts of community generosity gave Dogecoin a distinctive positive reputation within a cryptocurrency ecosystem often characterized by speculation and greed.

The Elon Musk period

Dogecoin entered mainstream awareness when Elon Musk began tweeting about it, beginning in earnest in 2020. Musk's references — calling himself the "Dogefather," posting Doge-related memes — produced dramatic price spikes. During the 2021 bull market, Dogecoin reached an all-time high of $0.73 in May 2021, giving it a market cap exceeding $90 billion. The rally and subsequent crash brought unprecedented mainstream media coverage to the meme coin concept.

Legacy

Dogecoin's legacy is primarily as proof of concept: it demonstrated that a cryptocurrency with no technical differentiator, launched as a joke, could achieve and sustain value purely through community conviction and cultural relevance. This demonstration enabled every subsequent meme coin, from Shiba Inu to the thousands of daily pump.fun launches. The modern memecoin industry is, in a direct line, the consequence of Dogecoin's unexpected success.
