A meme coin is a cryptocurrency whose value is derived primarily from community attention, cultural relevance, and speculative momentum rather than underlying technology or utility.

A meme coin is a cryptocurrency whose price is driven primarily by community attention, cultural narratives, and speculative momentum rather than by underlying technology, revenue, or measurable utility. The term emerged to describe assets like Dogecoin that began as internet jokes but developed real market capitalizations through viral attention, and has since expanded to cover the broader universe of tokens whose value proposition is essentially social.

History

The first recognized meme coin is Dogecoin, launched in December 2013 by engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a parody of the growing cryptocurrency space, based on the "Doge" internet meme. Despite being created as a joke, Dogecoin developed an active community and genuine market value, demonstrating that community conviction alone could sustain an asset's price. This established the template every subsequent meme coin has followed.

The next major phase came with Shiba Inu in 2020, which explicitly marketed itself as "the Dogecoin killer" and introduced token economics involving burns and ecosystem tokens. Then PEPE in 2023 demonstrated that Ethereum-native meme coins could reach billion-dollar market caps with no utility claims at all. The arrival of pump.fun in 2024 democratized meme coin creation on Solana, enabling any person to launch a token in under a minute for a few dollars, creating the current era of industrial-scale meme coin production.

What makes something a meme coin

The term is loosely applied but the key indicators are:

  • No revenue-generating product or protocol
  • Value derived from community size, attention, and narrative
  • Branding based on humor, cultural references, or internet figures
  • Price action driven by social momentum rather than fundamental metrics

The boundary between "meme coin" and "legitimate crypto project" is contested. Many projects begin as meme coins and attempt to build utility; few successfully transition.

The criticism

Critics argue meme coins are zero-sum or negative-sum speculation, redistributing wealth from late buyers to early buyers with no value creation. Proponents counter that community formation is itself a form of value, that entertainment has value, and that dismissing meme coins as worthless is the same error made about social media platforms before their value was established.
