Shiba Inu (ticker: SHIB) is an Ethereum-based ERC-20 meme coin launched in August 2020 by a pseudonymous developer known as "Ryoshi." Marketed explicitly as "the Dogecoin killer," SHIB attempted to combine the cultural appeal of dog meme coins with a more sophisticated token ecosystem. During the 2021 bull market, it reached a market cap of $40 billion, briefly making it one of the top ten cryptocurrencies globally.
The Vitalik donation
One of the most discussed events in SHIB's history occurred when Ryoshi sent 50% of the total SHIB supply to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin's wallet — an unusual marketing move positioning Buterin as a kind of involuntary endorser. Buterin responded by donating approximately $1 billion worth of SHIB to COVID relief funds in India and burning a substantial portion — actions he took to disclaim involvement with the project while managing his unexpected holding.
The SHIB ecosystem
Unlike most meme coins, SHIB developed a broader ecosystem including LEASH and BONE tokens, the ShibaSwap DEX, and the Shibarium Layer 2 network. Whether these additions constitute meaningful utility or are primarily branding exercises to maintain community engagement is debated.
