Paper hands is a derogatory label for a trader who sells their position at the first sign of price weakness or minor loss, abandoning their entry without waiting to see if the position recovers. The metaphor is a hands that crumple under pressure — unlike diamond hands, which hold firm regardless of market conditions. Paper hands and diamond hands form the central binary of holding culture in crypto.
Context
Paper hands behavior is most criticized in communities that are explicitly coordinating to hold a token for a significant move. In those contexts, early sellers directly undermine the collective strategy and are blamed for preventing price targets from being reached. Whether this criticism is fair depends on whether the underlying token has any reason to reach those targets, which is often unclear.
When paper hands is smart
From a pure trading perspective, the optimal strategy depends on the specific token. For the majority of pump.fun tokens that eventually go to near-zero, early selling (paper hands) is the rational choice. For the minority of tokens that reach 100x, diamond hands would have produced better outcomes. The difficulty is that you cannot know in advance which type you hold. The "paper hands" label is applied retrospectively by holders who benefited from others' paper hands (by getting their exit liquidity) while simultaneously blaming paper hands for limiting the upside.
